I was cruising around the net and found a site that translates what you name means if you were a Cyborg. Well “Tom” is a pretty short name and some of you may know that I often go by my middle name of “Airth”, so I thought I would check it out.
Amazingly it pegged me exactly!!!
Now how cool is that!! Almost like it knew the “inner me!”

What prompted this blog?
On Tuesday May 22, 2008 we had a very severe storm in north Atlanta where I live. As I calmly watched the trees in my backyard bend over almost horizontally and the dime size hail was pounding against my windows as though a herd of angry squirrels were pelting the house with acorns, the lights suddenly went out. Next came the mournful beeping of multiple UPS’ around the house accompanied by the angry, growling beep of my pissed off alarm system.
I sat on my sofa in the gentle glow of my laptop screen with a DVD in my hand that I had been about to load into my DVD player. As the storm peaked and my deck was nearly covered with small white chunks of hail, I finally realized that I might not be watching a DVD that night. I stuck the DVD back into its case and put my feet up on my coffee table. Assuming a very peaceful state of being, my hands cupped in the proper position meditative position on my lap, I began a silent prayer to the gods of electricity asking for them to restore the flow to my home. I prayed, I promised, I cajoled, I offered bribes (but no sacrifices, I do have limits!), all to no avail.
I slowly closed the top of my laptop and watched as the room about me became dimmer without it’s glow. What to do now? My mind was screaming for input. “I can’t just sit her and do...nothing!” the little voice in my head said. Since all of my electronic diversions were off the active list for the moment, it seemed like time to fall back to my ever reliable, if somewhat lower tech backup...reading. Now I was in the middle of a good novel and I was very OK with getting it, but even though the storm seemed to be dying out, the light was fading as the sun slowly set behind some cloud somewhere.
How to solve this conundrum? I scrunched my brow in through, and then it came to me...candles! It had been good enough for Abe Lincoln, perhaps I should give it a try. Then the little squeaky, geeky voice inside piped up. “No way dude! Candles are for when your girlfriend comes over. They aren’t for reading, they’re for setting a mood!” I thought about it for a moment and realized that the voice was right. What is a techie to do?
Then it came to me! This would be the perfect use for my I-Sight, clip on the ear, green LED flashlight! I dashed upstairs and grabbed it out of the drawer of my bedside table and grabbed my novel from the top of the table. Fitting the I-Sight onto my ear, I adjusted the fit and then pressed the button on the outside of it. The green glow lit up my bedroom nicely but didn’t blind me as a standard white light might have. With much more confidence I navigated back downstairs and plopped onto the sofa and opened up my book. With just a slight adjustment, the light filled both pages and made reading in the dark a snap!
About that time I heard the door next to me creak and my housemate emerged from her “Bat-cave” downstairs. One glance at her and I could tell that her last three hours of leveling up on the XBox 360 had vanished into the void with our power loss. She slowly began to drop her hands which had still been frozen in game-controller position and blinked a few times as she looked over toward me. “Hey 7 of 9” she said. I shook my head no, everyone knows that 7 of 9 was a girl. I told her, “I must be 8 of 9 or maybe 10 of 9!”
At that moment I realized that I had really geeked out. I love technology! I’m fascinated by the stuff and always love to have new “toys.” My house is just filled with the stuff and I would hate to tell you how many computers there are in my office. At that moment, right there. Sitting in the dark, probably blinding my housemate with my very BORGelicious ear light, my new motto popped into my mind. “Have Tech - Will Geek.”
So now I’ve decided to share my fascination with all things new, techie and cool with the world. As I prowl the Internet, or at odd moments when the notion strikes me, I’ll post what’s on my mind or the newest find I’ve made.
